WELCOME TO THE BATTLE FIELD WARNING: BLUE-ZONE

Updated: Jun 28, 2019

Sangam Vihar, Delhi. The name completes the meaning of the title itself. Asia’s largest assemblage of “unauthorized colony”, Sangam Vihar diurnal have fights , gang wars and gun battles over the most important resource of the earth i.e. Water. Over 1.5 million people live into the poky 5 km2 area that it covers. It is on full view in the narrow streets of Sangam Vihar that motorcycles, e-rickshaws, cows and pedestrians all fight for space. Fighting the same battle is a juggernaut tanker driver getting curses by everyone on the way. “Sangam Vihar witnessed the murder of a 45-year-old man over a dispute that broke out over the laying of a piped water connection.” The resultant water crisis has made Sangam Vihar a haven for criminals and given birth to gangs whose member do not hesitate even to kill for water. Here, often these small fights escalate into gun battles among gangs. The place is no different from a battlefield. Statistics says: “Average Salary in Sangam Vihar, is Rupees 8,000-10,000 . Everyone ends up spending Rs. 2000-3000 for water per month. ” How one can suppose development and healthy life status in such conditions and that too in the National Capital where the Netas promises to give such facilities for free? It’s ironic that the most immediate threat here is the flooding of parts of Sangam Vihar. Heavy seasonal monsoon rains are unable to find channels for drainage due to the illicit dumping of waste in channels. Water logging and drain water become open invitation to epidemics. On the other hand, there’s no water to drink. “The unplanned area in Sangam Vihar has made life here unbearable.” Due to all this going over here, people are impotent of standing for their rights. Ironically, this area is different from the others in the way people use to fight with each other for water crisis and other facilities rather than uniting and raising their voices. You could find my voices rising. But the need is for a crowd who can unite and run a movement. This place lacks an egalitarian. ~Sakshi_Jangra
